Smurfit Kappa Benelux supports initiative to provide corrugated based houses as emergency shelter
Smurfit Kappa Benelux sponsors the Lions Europe Forum 2011 and proudly supports the initiative of the Calamatic Foundation to provide corrugated based emergency shelters to aid the people in disaster areas. The City of Maastricht, the Netherlands, hosted the 57th Europe Forum of European Lions from October 13 to 15, 2011. Many visitors from different European countries had the opportunity to take a close look at the corrugated prototype shelter.
A number of individuals from Smurfit Kappa Benelux, amongst whom Mr. Wim Peeters (Managing Director Smurfit Kappa Van Dam) and Mr. Chris Wiegers (Account Manager Smurfit Kappa Van Dam/Twincorr) and the Calamatic Foundation have combined forces and took the great initiative to work together to develop new and improved emergency relief structures. The ultimate corrugated shelters are designed to be quickly deployed and because they are flat packed many can be shipped to disaster areas at one time. Successful tests were done in countries like Pakistan and Panama. Setting up requires two to three people and takes about one and a half hour. The rectangular shelter can house up to six people. It is outfitted with solar panels and can be wired for utilities. The model has an internal supporting structure, is water and fire resistant and UV-proof. The houses are designed to support victims after a disaster as a mid-term shelter, rather than as a first response.
The Lions Club Council chairman, Mr. Jan Troost, was very pleased with the sponsorship of Smurfit Kappa Benelux and said he believes in a profound partnership. “The first bridge has been built between the different partners; now it is time to think of the next steps to take to further develop this excellent project and to contribute to improve the lives of the world's poorest communities.”
Smurfit Kappa Benelux regards corporate social responsibility (CSR) as part of a continuing process of building long-term value. Mr. Chris Wiegers is convinced that profit maximization should not be the companies’ single objective and that CSR is an important factor for the organizations’ future success and will lead to profit optimization in the longer term. “We are very much engaged to take part in constructing a world of greater solidarity.”
