Flexible packaging manufacturer and distributor LC Packaging and Veolia Nederland, active in optimized resource management, have announced a collaboration with the aim to minimize the residual streams of waste related to flexible packaging worldwide.
The companies want to launch a circular program aimed at recovering and upcycling flexible packaging waste after use. Currently, the vast majority of flexible packaging is still burned or landfilled after use.
Little recycling facilities
In addition to various packaging solutions, LC Packaging has distributed more than 11 million FIBC’s (big bags) in 2018, much of which is produced in its own production site in Bangladesh. Because of an increase in demand for these packaging solutions, the company has opened a second location. With China and Vietnam closing their doors for the recycling of big bags, there is a surplus on the market of used big bags for which too little recycling facilities are available.
Circular program
Both companies have started with the implementation of the circular program in a pilot with a small number of sustainable customers of LC Packaging. When this proofs successful, the intention of both companies is to further expand this solution with activities of new customers, industries and supply chain partners that are within range of the LC Packaging portfolio. Within the framework of cooperation, Veolia Nederland is responsible for retrieving and recycling the reclaimed packaging and converting it to high-quality compositions.
