RPC Astrapak Marcom, Verstraete IML and Sigalo Foods have joined forces which resulted in a special packaging design with the metallic tubs of Rama. This design was recently recognized with a gold medal at the IPSA Gold Pack Awards 2018 in the category Food.
During the IML process, static electricity is used to keep the IML label in place. Because 100% metallic labels are electrically conductive, they perform the static charge. This creates instability during injection of the polyprop. That provides a wrong alignment of the IML labels and additional loss. In normal circumstances, metallic IML labels in standard dies are not easy to process. Thus Verstraete IML.
Gerhard van Reenen, General Manager of RPC Astrapak Marcom, informs: ‘With a joint venture between Verstraete IML and RPC Astrapak Marcom, a new label was created through cold foil printing. The artwork parameters were adjusted to ensure that the metallized surface does not exceed the predetermined limit. The solution was a partially metallized in-mould label. Some parts of the tub are not covered with metallic foil. To the naked eye, however, the entire tub has a fully metallized appearance. With this kind of technology, the static charge remains on the non-metallic parts to retain the label stable during the injection process.’
Three companies
RPC Astrapak is active in the field of the artwork, the development, the technology and the production of molded and preformed packaging.
Remgro took over the South African spread activity of Unilever. The name of the new spread organization is Sigalo Foods, which, among other things, includes the Rama product range.
Verstraete IML is a manufacturer of in-mould labels for various segments in the packaging industry.
