Italië is op vier landen na het slechtst wat betreft afval en verspilling. Het land produceert bergen met (zwerf)afval, wat in Rome heeft geresulteerd in een heuse crisis. In de warme zomermaanden kan dit voor gezondheidsrisico’s zorgen.

Om dit probleem het hoofd te bieden en mensen te stimuleren hun afval in te leveren voor recycling, is transportbedrijf Atac in Rome een milieuvriendelijk initiatief gestart, genaamd Ricicli+Viaggi (recycle en reis).
"Statiegeld"-automaten
Door inlevering van plastic flessen bij een soort van statiegeldautomaten op drie stations in de Italiaanse hoofdstad, sparen reizigers credits voor het openbaar vervoer. Dit krediet kan worden gebruikt voor bus- en metrokaartjes. De statiegeldautomaten blijven 12 maanden staan voor de testfase. Als het een succes blijkt te zijn, dan zullen meer automaten worden geplaatst.

To confront this problem and to encourage people to hand in their waste for recycling, transport company Atac in Rome started an environmentally friendly initiative called Ricicli+Viaggi (recycle and travel).
Deposit machines
By turning in plastic bottles at some sort of deposit machines at three stations in Rome, travellers save credits for public transport. This credit can be used for a bus or subway ticket. The deposit machines will be there for a testing period of 12 months. If it turns out to be a success, there will be more vending machines.
