Hotelketen Marriott International breidt haar initiatief uit om kleine eenmalige flacons met shampoo, conditioner en douchegel in de gastenbadkamers te vervangen door grotere flacons met een pompje.
Marriott International stelt dat een grotere flacon overeenkomt met ongeveer 10 tot 12 kleine flacons voor eenmalig gebruik. Omdat kleine flacons meestal niet worden gerecycled, eindigen deze in de afvalbakken van de hotels, waardoor afval wordt gegenereerd dat nooit echt zal worden afgebroken op afvalstortplaatsen. De grotere flacons kunnen samen met andere standaardverpakkingen zoals plastic drankflessen worden gerecycled.
Minder plastic
Inmiddels heeft Marriott International al grotere flacons ingevoerd in ongeveer 1.000 hotels en resorts in Noord-Amerika en het bedrijf verwacht dat het merendeel van de overige hotels in december 2020 de overstap heeft gemaakt. Wanneer dit wereldwijd volledig is uitgevoerd, is de verwachting dat dit een vermindering van ongeveer 500 miljoen kleine flacons per jaar zal opleveren. Dit betekent circa 770.000 kg minder plastic op afvalstortplaatsen, een afname van 30%.
International hotel chain is going for less plastic
Marriott, an international hotel chain, is expanding its initiative to replace small single-use bottles of shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the guest bathrooms by larger bottles with a pump.
Marriott International informs that a larger bottle corresponds to approximately 10 to 12 small single-dose vials. Usually small bottles are not recycled and end up in the waste bins of the hotels, which generates waste that will never really be broken down at waste dumps. The larger bottles can be recycled together with other standard packaging, such as plastic beverage bottles.
Less plastic
In the meantime, Marriott International has already introduced the larger vials in about 1.000 hotels and resorts in North America and the company expects that most of the other hotels made the switch by December 2020. When this is done globally, it is expected that this will result in a reduction of approximately 500 million small bottles annually. This means about 770.000 kg less plastic in landfills, a decrease of 30%.
